Client Advisory – New Travel Rules for Non-European Visitors to Cyprus

Council-takes-first-step-towards-new-EU-rules-news

Effective from October 2025

By Helen Daniilidou 14/08/2025

The Republic of Cyprus is introducing new border procedures for non-EU travellers as part of its integration into the EU’s security and border management systems. These changes will affect entry requirements, screening, and—later—visa rules.

1. Entry/Exit System (EES) – October 2025

From October 2025, Cyprus will join the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES). This will:

  • Replace passport stamping with electronic registration of entry and exit dates.
  • Require biometric checks at the border (facial image and fingerprints).
  • Automatically track the 90 days in 180 days limit for short-term stays for visa-exempt travellers.

Tip: Keep your travel documents ready for scanning, and allow extra time for border checks during the initial months.

2. ETIAS – Coming Late 2026

Once EES is established, Cyprus will adopt the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for nationals from visa-exempt countries (including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, etc.).

  • Online application required before travel.
  • €20 fee per application.
  • Valid for 3 years or until passport expiry (whichever comes first).
  • Linked to your passport—no physical document required.

3. Cyprus Joining Schengen – Planned for 2026

Cyprus is expected to join the Schengen Area in 2026.

  • Once this happens, your days in Cyprus will count toward the 90/180-day limit for travel across all Schengen countries.
  • Non-EU travellers will need either:
    • A Schengen visa (for those who require one), or
    • A valid ETIAS authorisation (for visa-exempt travellers).

Advice for Travellers & Clients

  • Plan ahead for October 2025 travel—arrive early at borders while EES is new.
  • If you are a frequent visitor to Cyprus and other EU countries, track your 90/180 days carefully once EES begins.
  • From late 2026, apply for ETIAS well before your trip to avoid last-minute delays.
